Records Continue to Fall for Track and Field on Penn Relays Friday

The rookie was ready, and the North Penn girls 4×800-meter relay team once again pushed its way through a stacked deck to advance to Friday's Championship of America. The event has drawn top high school, college, and world-class athletes from around the globe and has been the scene of numerous American and world records. With Lindsay Yentz (1,200), Aisha Brown (400) and Sierra Biber (800) on the first three legs, the second-place Pioneers crossed in 11:51.46.

Grayson Murphy of Utah won the women's steeplechase with a time of 10:05.77, which broke the facility record of 10:15.23 set by Oregon's Brianna Nerud previous year.

"It's a great honor to be involved with the Penn Relays and to continue my association with the university through athletics", he said.

Saloni Hebron, Michaela Boyd, Becca Lehman and Kaylee Wadlington ran a 4:00.21, good enough to place fourth out of 12, with many of those other teams being league rivals. "It's an honor to be from the host school and to run in the Penn Relays". This is her fifth Championship of America relay victory and the second straight year that she has run the anchor leg of a winning 4x1500 meter relay.

"It's an honor to me that I will be in competition alongside these athletes", Montes said. "For me, I just listen to my legs".

She was preceded by Bella Burda, Angel Piccirillo and Nicole Hutchinson. She picked off all but two of the runners in front of her, with tears streaming down her face the whole time.

"I've never had an athlete be able to accelerate like she has", coach Gina Procaccio said.

"Usually I like to wait to just before the 200 to go, but as it was today, I just thought it was too slow", Buttner said. "I think we can cut that much time, but I know it's going to be hard".

But no small part of it comes because of the push Buttner's teammates give her, and the tireless pursuit - on her part, and everyone else's - of the stars who preceded her at VU.

"Once I went, I just tried to hold my form and not look back", he said.

"Going into the coming weeks, my training is definitely going to get more intense and pick up a lot", she said.

Keegan had room to run, which allowed her to stay close to Miller, who tried to break the race open.

Unfortunately, Hopewell Valley's Sean Dolan ran down Romero to move his team into third in 7:53.45, behind Oxon Hill (Md.) in 7:40.35 and St. Jago (Jamaica) in 7:48.74. Keegan, who has had trouble breaking 56 seconds, turned in a 54.05 split.

"He knows what's best for me".

The Penn Relays, JMI Sports, and Nike Inc. announced an agreement that makes Nike the exclusive athletic footwear and apparel supplier and sponsor of the Penn Relays through the 2020 Olympiad.

"We definitely wanted this DMR", Procaccio said. "We haven't been to the Penn Relays since the '90s, and we actually haven't won a relay since the '40s, but I'm excited to see what we can do".
