Hurricanes acquire G Darling from Blackhawks

Francis said he would begin preliminary talks with Matt Keator, Darling's agent, early next week.

"Scott had a very successful season in Chicago and was a big part of the Blackhawks finishing with the best record in the Western Conference", Hurricanes GM Ron Francis said in a team release. Out of 60 goaltenders who have started at least a combined 25 games the last two seasons, Ward ranked 52nd in save percentage (.907) and Lack was 58th (.902). "I feel like I've paid my dues as a backup, and when I've played consecutive games I've shown that I can do it". "We appreciate his contributions to the Blackhawks organization - including a Cup Championship team - and we wish him well as he continues his career in Carolina".

The Blackhawks will receive a third-round pick in this summer's draft from the deal announced Friday night.

The 28-year-old netminder is coming off a season where he posted an 18-5-5 record, a 2.38 goals-against average, and.924 save percentage.

Darling's NHL career began when he was selected in the sixth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. Before making his NHL debut, he played games at almost every North American professional level, including the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), ECHL, Central Hockey League (CHL) and American Hockey League (AHL).

Carolina relied on Cam Ward as their primary starter during the 2016-17 year, as he made 61 starts with Eddie Lack serving as his back-up. Ward is set to earn $3.3 million, while Lack costs $2.75 million.

There are risks to the trade.

Darling had a 39-17-9 record and 2.37 goals against average with a.923 save percentage in three seasons with the Blackhawks. Darling is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, so instead of losing him for nothing, the Hawks chose to trade him to Carolina for a third-round pick.

It's believed that Darling had emerged as a candidate for starting job with the expansion Vegas Golden Knights, interest that could have conceivably prompted the move. "He's one of the tallest goalies in the league at 6'6", with only 6'7" Ben Bishop taller than him among NHL regulars this past season. His only non-start decision came in an overtime loss March 21 against Vancouver when he entered a 4-1 game early in the third period. Lack went on to go 4-1-1 in his next six starts, pushing Carolina to the edge of the playoff race, but suffered a neck strain in the final game in that stretch following a collision on the Red Wings' overtime victor.
