Unemployment rates fall to record lows in 4 US states

The preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for March was 3 percent, the state Department of Labor said. The labor force includes the employed and those seeking work.

"Demographics - the aging population - is the single most significant factor in the low unemployment rate", said Lawton, since a shrinking labor force drives down the unemployment rate.

The California jobless rate fell below 5 percent for the first time since 2006, according to the Employment Development Department.

"The establishment survey showed little gain, but this was likely due to the storm in March combined with the warmer-than-normal weather in January and February", said Michael Walden, an economics professor at N.C. State University.

What's more, the unemployment rate fell even as the county's labor force grew by 15,000 to 5,082,000, thanks to the fact that 24,000 more county residents reported they were working in March than had reported in February.

The Lewiston Metropolitan Statistical Area experienced the strongest seasonally adjusted over-the-year job growth with an increase of 4.7 percent, or 1,300 jobs, the report said.

Iowa's total nonfarm employment rose by 8,100 positions between March 2016 and March 2017. This year, the data suggests, those unemployed people are finding jobs, causing the unemployment rate to drop.

Larimer County had 187,209 people employed in March and 4,000 looking for work. In five states is it much lower, below 2.9%, which shows how much the jobless situation can differ from place to place. Scott's office said Tampa Bay had 44,544 job openings, the highest number in the state. The rate remains below the year-ago estimate of 9.9 percent. Construction and professional and business services failed to meet Marchs seasonal job growth expectations as the western US precipitation conditions disrupted typical hiring patterns. The industry, according to the agency, added 44,300 jobs, or a 3.6 percent increase. MA posted 3.6 percent, Rhode Island 4.3 percent, and CT 4.8 percent. The largest payroll declines were in the following sectors: Construction (-7,100); Professional and Business Services (-3,600); and Government (-1,900).
