UN strongly condemns North Korean missile launch after delay

There has also been ratcheted up rhetoric from the U.S. and Pyongyang, with the latter's state media warning Thursday that a pre-emptive strike by North Korea would result in the USA and South Korea being "completely destroyed in an instant".

Trump has focused his efforts on North Korea on trying to persuade China to put more pressure on its ally and could view any unusual Chinese military movements as supportive of this.

Ryan said he was encouraged by the results of efforts to work with China to reduce tension, but that it was unacceptable North Korea might be able to strike allies with nuclear weapons.

The statement includes a Security Council demand that "the Democratic People's Republic of Korea conduct no further tests".

It would seem, according to multiple sources, that China is boosting its military preparedness in response to a recent threat from North Korea.

More than a thousand US troops have teamed up with South Korean forces for operation Max Thunder.

Trump stumbled into a long history dispute between the Asian neighbors; specifically, their views over the dominion of ancient kingdoms whose territories stretched from the Korean Peninsula to Manchuria. And for a period during the 13th century, both China and Korea were under the rule of the Mongolian empire.

Pyongyang said it will not be frightened by these threats and that its army is closely watching U.S. maneuvers and waiting for an order to counter any threat immediately. While North Korea has always been a volatile country, the necessity of trade relations with China has kept the regime's 33-year-old leader relatively subdued in past years.

Council diplomats, speaking anonymously because discussions were private, said the US, which is in charge of drafting council statements and resolutions on North Korea, had dropped the call for "dialogue" as part of its effort to toughen the text.

Relations between China and South Korea are tense right now because Seoul is deploying the THAAD anti-missile system, a move that China sees as a strategic threat.

While the commentary did not mention China by name, Pyongyang expressed its criticism of "a country around North Korea", Efe news reported.

We haven't yet reached the tension level of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, which put the United States in direct confrontation with the Soviet Union and brought the world to the brink of nuclear war, but the current tension between the USA and North Korea could quickly spiral downward.

"Although North Korea attempted a missile launch but failed on 16 April, considering the 25 April anniversary of the Korean People's Army, there are concerns that it can make another provocation again at any time", South Korea's acting president Hwang Kyo-ahn told top officials on Thursday.

Trump's claim was apparently based on a brief and inaccurate history lesson from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who brought his own chauvinist bias to the table.
