Wunder no more: Microsoft releases new task managing app called To-Do

The preview of the new Microsoft To-Do application is available for iPhone, Android phones, Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile and the Web starting today. If these options popped open in the sidebar when creating an item it would be great since it would be right there in front of you as you created the list entry.

It is clear the influence that Wunderlist has had on Microsoft's new To-Do and the company does highlight this in today's announcement post.

The Redmond firm is encouraging users to test this new solution out and offer suggestions, ask questions and engage with the support team over on the Microsoft Authenticator forum.

Most of the features from Wunderlist are absent at the moment, which is also why Microsoft hasn't shut down Wunderlist...

Users can create lists, add due dates, keep track of deadlines by adding reminders and personalise each list with coloured themes. Microsoft also plans to release To-Do for Android tablets, along with the iPad and Mac PCs, sometime in the future.

Essentially, the new Microsoft To-Do app carries on with all that made the Wunderlist so endearing though it has also been enhanced on a number of fronts, which among other includes deeper integration with other Microsoft services. "You can talk to us via our in-app contact form, on UserVoice, Twitter or Facebook". While the name and icon may change, the team that brought you Wunderlist continues on. Microsoft, on April 19, 2017, announced their Microsoft To-Do. In its blog, Microsoft presented this as an easy way to manage lists, as these can be "just as hard to follows as they were to complete". Outlook Tasks, for example, can be synced with To-Do.

Microsoft acquired the Wunderlist app when it bought Berlin-based 6Wunderkinder GmbH in 2015 for an estimated $100 million to $200 million.

One major difference between Wunderlist and Microsoft To-Do is that the new service will only be available to Office 365 subscribers and not as a stand alone to-do app/service.

The phone sign in feature works when signing in from a desktop or phone browser. iPhones that are TouchID-enabled can confirm an approval by pressing the home button, and earlier iPhones can confirm it with a passcode. "Just approve the notification sent to the Microsoft Authenticator after entering your username, and provide your passcode or TouchID", the company said regarding the phone sign-in feature in its changelog on App Store.
