Huge berg is hot ticket in small Canadian town

And the iceberg which has taken up residence just outside Ferryland is thought to be about 45m high, more than 15m higher than the one which the Titanic struck in 1912.

As icebergs break off the Greenland ice shelf and float down the Atlantic Ocean, the water near Newfoundland and Labrador sees hundreds of the formations float by in the spring and summer, providing tourists with a great opportunity for taking memorable snapshots.

And this enormous iceberg, one of the first of the season to float into 'iceberg alley, ' has turned the small town of Ferryland into a sudden tourist spot.

According to the Canadian Ice Service (yes, that's a real agency), the iceberg that appeared near the town of Ferryland during the Easter weekend is classified as "large." Kavanagh was surprised by the influx of people and interest in the geological wonder. Those kinds of numbers are usually not seen until late May or early June. "It's a huge iceberg and it's in so close that people can get a good photograph of it".

He's lived in St. John's his entire life and said the icebergs "are wonderful to see in person".

Pictures have been making the rounds on social media, including one of a helicopter apparently parked on one end, looking insect- size in comparison.

"It's not moving out of there unless this winds stay up for another while, because [the iceberg's] right in on the shallow ground", he said.

"You can see off in the distance on a clear day. you can see five or six big bergs", he said.

Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, said it is possible climate change is leading to more icebergs in the shipping lanes, but wind patterns are also important.
