'Shadow Of An Animal' Sneaks Into Woman's Bedroom And Snatches Dog

The woman and her child were sleeping when she heard their small dog, a 15-pound Portuguese Pondengo, barking aggressively around 3 a.m. April 17.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office warned residents to keep pets indoors, and make sure all doors and windows are securely locked.

When the woman followed with a flashlight in search of her dog she reportedly spotted large wet paw prints at the entrance to the bedroom and immediately called 911.

Responding deputies found prints suggesting a mountain lion.

There have been no additional sightings of the mountain lion or the dog.

"As soon as I saw it walk out, I said, 'That's a lion, '" Fought told CBS News.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife were also notified of the reported incident, the Sheriff's Office said. Salvador Zuno, spokesman for the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

"They live in a very rural area, which is essentially mountain lion territory", Zuno told The Post early Tuesday. In a frenzied May 2015 incident, a juvenile 90-pound mountain lion wandered into a residential neighborhood at the edge of downtown San Mateo.

The family shows a video of their dog, who was apparently snatched by a mountain lion early Monday morning.

Department spokesman Andrew Hughan said a game warden was at the Pescadero site throughout Monday conducting an investigation and would be releasing the findings the following day. Mountain lions tend to feed on deer and stay away from homes and tend to leave pets alone.

Meanwhile, Zuno said residents should take precautions and safeguard their homes. The mountain lion gained entry to the house via the back door which was cracked open.

When a California family left their door opened a crack to air out their bedroom, they said they never would have expected a mountain lion to take advantage of the easy access to their home.

But Ms Fought and her daughter are astonished that a mountain lion could have been so bold.
