Hillary Clinton apologized to Obama after Trump's victory

She said: "Congratulations, Donald".

She told Trump that she was committed to country's success and "that means your success as president". "I'm sorry", she said.

I am sure Obama always remained ambivalent about Hillary Clinton from their 2008 contest, as he was very critical of Bill Clinton's "triangulation" in The Audacity of Hope.

"You need to concede", urged Obama, who repeated the message in a follow-up call to Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta. It was then she made a decision to call and congratulate Trump on his win.

Clinton finally succumbed to the loss with the words: "Give me the phone", according to the book.

"It's the president", Abedin said.

"Mr. President, I'm sorry". She had let herself down.

First came a call from White House political director David Simas to Clinton's campaign manager, Robby Mook. But over the night, as results from the key swing states were released, the truth dawned gradually on the Clinton campaign that loss was inevitable.

After being widely criticized for a series of seemingly flippant answers about the server controversy, and in response to polling that showed the issue was damaging her standing with voters, she later appeared to capitulate to her advisers, apologizing for the server in September 2016 during an interview with ABC News.

However, what is not included in the book, according to the Washington Post, is any delving into the possibility of Russian hacking into the election, and any repercussions it might have had on Clinton's campaign and the election. "But I feel pride and gratitude for this wonderful campaign that we built together - this vast, diverse, creative, unruly, energized campaign".

When Trump eventually came on the line Clinton conceded graciously.

After calling Mr Trump to congratulate him on his election win, Mrs Clinton reportedly called former President Barack Obama and apologised.

The call from Obama, according to the book, "crystallized everything for Hillary".

"He couldn't understand what possessed Hillary to set up the private e-mail server, and her handling of the scandal- obfuscate, deny, and evade- amounted to political malpractice", the authors wrote. The president, who had hit the campaign trail hard for Clinton, now believed the race was over and was determined that she accept her defeat with "dignity".

She later had an emotional phone call with Obama where she told him she knew she had "let her country down" and that his legacy lay "shattered at Donald Trump's feet".
