5 things to know about Tax Day: refunds are up, audits down

However, the president would also like you to know that he himself isn't happy.

Other events took place without major incidents in such US cities as Chicago, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C., and outside pf Trump's south Florida resort home, Mar-a-Lago.

"If he's got nothing to hide, he should release his tax returns", said protester Liz Turner, 31.

Critics were in marches around the country over the weekend, demanding Trump release his returns.

Thousands of protesters gathered in cities across the United States to pressure President Donald Trump to release his tax returns, a move of transparency he has refused to make.

Comedian Sarah Silverman told The Associated Press that she feels "beholden to be an active citizen".

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, of NY, has said Trump's refusal to release his returns could hinder Republicans' prospects for a rewrite of the tax code. The Oregon Democrat says the people have "a basic right to know whether the president pays his fair share". When the topic came up during the town hall in Denair, Denham replied by saying he's "not going to ask the previous president that I served under to show his birth certificate any more than I would ask this president to show his taxes".

Images of tax protesters in cities including Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and NY flooded social media.

Organizers say similar Tax Day protests are being held in about 150 cities to demand that Trump release his tax returns. Though there is now no real motivation for Trump to release his tax records, it is clear that it is an issue that is and will continue to be very important to the American people.

Although it's not legally required for a president to release his or her tax returns, all presidents in the last 40 years have done so.

Toting handmade signs, marchers shouted their discontent regarding the current administration's transparency and potential conflicts of interest due to Trump's global business ties.

And in front of a few thousand people on the lawn of the US Capitol there was an oversized inflatable chicken with hair resembling Mr Trump's, suggesting the US leader is "too chicken" to release his tax returns to the public.
