Boy killed in classroom was 'happy child' with rare disorder

San Bernardino, a city of 216,000 people about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, was the site of a December 2015 terror attack that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others at a meeting of San Bernardino County employees. It all ended on Monday at the San Bernardino elementary school where Smith taught.

When school staff let Anderson in, they didn't know his relationship with Smith was on the rocks, police said.

School shootings have grabbed so many headlines in recent years that we've nearly become accustomed to them. Martinez died at a hospital after being shot Monday in his classroom by the estranged husband of his teacher, Karen Smith, who also was killed.

They did, however, wish to bring attention and consciousness to an issue facing Jonathan called Williams syndrome. "To see that his school is safe".

Jonathan's loved ones have dealt with the tragedy by talking about Williams syndrome, which he lived with for his eight years.

Monday's gunman was identified as 53-year-old Cedric Anderson of nearby Riverside, who according to police had a criminal record that included four past arrests, most recently in 2013 on assault and weapons charges.

Police first received a report of shots fired at the school at 10:27 a.m., followed by a report of an active shooter at the campus.

The rest of the school's students were taken by bus to Cal State San Bernardino, where they were fed lunch and interviewed by police.

Schools superintendent Dale Marsden said Tuesday that Jonathan Martinez had Williams syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by learning delays, mild intellectual disability and heart problems.

The family of Jonathan Martinez, the 8-year-old student killed in the shooting, did not wish to speak publicly, Marsden said. Jonathan's family shared photos of the boy on Tuesday. A 9-year-old boy, whose name was not released, also was wounded but was in "good spirits", the police chief said. However, the other student was reported to be in stable condition after originally described as being in critical condition.

Smith's mother said after the two Wednesday in January, Anderson quickly showed a dark side and her daughter moved out and was contemplating divorce.

Anderson seemed like a man of faith with whom she could share the next chapter of her life. "He started reading and doing long math", Valles said.

"He told her he would throw her out the window", Skyes added. Before Elliot Rodger shot and killed six people and then himself in Santa Barbara, California, in 2014, he left a video in which he expressed his anger at women who had rejected him, saying, "I will punish you all for it".

"She keeps telling me, 'My teacher got shot, my friend got shot, '" her mother, Elizabeth Barajas, said as she clutched her daughter's blood-stained sweatshirt.

She wrote in court documents that Cedric wanted her to pay for their divorce, and when she refused, he told her that "we would all die, me the kids and himself". One father trying to find his daughter told KABC how he felt when he heard the news.
