Obama expected at Protestant event in Berlin next month

The Obama-Merkel appearance is expected to occur prior to President Trump's first meeting with Merkel overseas, at the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg in July, the Associated Press notes.

Obama visited Germany six times as president, but he captured the hearts and minds of Germans before he was even elected.

He and Ms Merkel will speak on a purpose-built stage at the historic Brandenberg Gate, Berlin's most prominent monument, which stands as a symbol of the Iron Curtain and the end of the Cold War when Germany was divided into East and West by the Berlin War.

President Trump, however, has been more critical of the German leader for what he has called open-border policies and Germany's willingness to offer asylum to refugees.

In 2014, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies agreed in Wales that, by 2024, each member of the transatlantic military alliance would spend two percent of its GDP on defence.

Merkel and May expressed support to Trump for his military action undertaken in Syria on April 7 in response to a chemical attack on civilians, the White House said in a press release.

The event will take place at the Brandenburg Gate, not far from Obama's first major worldwide speech in Europe as he campaigned for president in 2008.

While German Chancellor Angela Merkel continues to talk up increasing military spending, with an eye toward getting closer to long-standing United States demands for 2% of GDP spending on their military, her main opponent for chancellor, the SPD's Martin Schulz is vowing to go the other direction. During a trip to Germany in November, Obama called Merkel his "closest ally".

Trump, who is deeply unpopular in Germany, is set to visit the country in July for a Group of 20 meeting in Hamburg, two months before Germany's federal elections. He's made no public appearances, instead spending long stretches at various tropical escapes working on his forthcoming memoir.

While aides to both men spoke in the aftermath of Trump's claims, the two presidents have not themselves discussed the matter.
