Comey: I know when I'm going to cause a 'storm'

But a new development in the ongoing Trump-Russia melodrama suggests that Reid's criticism of Comey may have been slightly misdirected. Present in the meeting were, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, National Security adviser Susan Rice, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and Secretary of State John Kerry.

While there's no point in handwringing over what could have happened had Comey published the op-ed, it's worth it to consider the timeline and how this information could have possibly influenced things. "I want to go forward", the source says Comey said, an idea dismissed by the others.

Comey revealed during a hearing before the House Intelligence Committee last week that the FBI is investigating Russian meddling in the election as well as potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Comey attempted to publish an Op-Ed on allegations that the Russian government was interfering with the United States election process well before federal agencies went public with the claims, Newsweek reported on Wednesday.

FBI Director James Comey planned to write an op-ed early last summer making the case that Russian Federation was meddling in the USA election, but other top Obama administration officials vetoed the idea. The administration officials reportedly thought a coordinated announcement with the sign-off from multiple intelligence agencies was a more appropriate response. "We further assess Putin and the Russian government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump". Still, it was that slowness that had many in the Clinton camp feeling bitter against the Obama administration, according to the New Yorker. The Obama administration would not make a similar public accusation until October 7, when the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security alleged that Russian Federation was involved in cyber attacks against Democrats.

The intelligence community believes Kremlin-backed actors released emails hacked from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) with the intention of hurting Hillary Clinton's campaign.

The U.S. House and Senate have launched individual intelligence committees to explore possible ties between Russian officials and members of President Trump's campaign team.

The FBI director, who came under fire for making disclosures about the investigation into Clinton's emails days before the election, was held back from going public about the Russian Federation investigation by the White House, a source maintained.

Asked about Comey's push to write an op-ed over the summer, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Investigation said by email, "In general we have not been adding to the director's comments regarding Russian Federation at the March 20 hearing".
