Police union warns Trump 'sanctuary city' cuts could risk safety

Doing so could contribute to public safety problems, the leader of the nation's largest police union exclusively told Reuters Tuesday after a White House meeting between law enforcement leaders and the Trump administration.

"I'm Chuck Canterbury, the national president Fraternal Order of Police in SC", the man said. Angelo, in a news release last week, said national officials of the Fraternal Order of Police had invited him to meet with "key members" of the Trump administration. "When policing is reduced, the main victims are the most vulnerable citizens of our society, and you see that all over".

Trump was seated next to FOP president Chuck Canterbury. "Almost 700 more have already been shot since January of this year alone", Trump said.

Its Chicago affiliate says it has 8,202 members. "There's no excuse for it".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday the Justice Department would cut off grants to local police departments in cities that do not comply with federal immigration laws.

During the election and since becoming president on January 20, Trump has been bringing up Chicago's ongoing struggle to reduce violent crime in the city, threatening at one point to "send in the Feds". "Local law enforcement know their communities best and the Trump administration is trying to undermine their role by threatening to take away critical funds that make our communities safe and keep criminals off the streets".

But when Sessions met on March 16 at the Justice Department with several police chiefs, including Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, one participant said the attorney general seemed supportive of his civil rights division's work.

A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment when asked about the discrepancy between the executive order and Sessions' announcement.

The Fraternal Order of Police boasts some 330,000 members, and more than 8,200 of them are in Chicago.
