A lack of coolant circulation can cause these vehicles to overheat and explode.
Door latches have been a major problem for Ford vehicles during the past three years, resulting in investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and recalls of over 3 million vehicles. This is an expansion of a previous recall from 2015, and Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the issue.
The recall also affects the 2014-15 Ford Fiesta ST, 2013-14 Ford Fusion and 2013-15 Ford Transit Connect. This is the fifth such recall, involving some 400,000 Escape vehicles in the United States, since the compact SUV made its debut for 2013.
There are approximately 230,756 vehicles equipped with 1.6-liter GTDI engines located in North America, including 208,584 in the United States and federalized territories, 21,854 in Canada and 318 in Mexico. To fix the issue, dealers will install service kits which include a coolant level sensor with supporting hardware and software.
Ford said it will mail customers instructions from the owner's manual on how to check and refill coolant. Ford recalled the 2013 Escape two more times for fuel lines on the 1.6-liter engine that could split and leak gasoline.
Almost half a million Ford vehicles are being recalled to fix issues ranging from coolant problems to bad door latches and flawed drive shafts.
In the latest recall a pawl in the door latch can break, either stopping the doors from closing or causing them to open while the cars are being driven. The door may suddenly open while driving, rebound while closing, or be hard to close.
Ford is recalling more than 570,000 vehicles in North America and Europe to fix separate problems that can cause engine fires and doors to fly open unexpectedly. Ford said it had not recorded any crashes or injuries connected to the defect. A total of 509 trucks are affected in the United States.
Ford is issuing a safety compliance recall for approximately 548 2017 Ford F-450 and F-550 vehicles to replace the driveshaft.
Dealers will replace the two-piece drive shaft with a three-piece version along with two center-bearing brackets.
