Morse author Colin Dexter dies

It read: "With enormous sadness, Macmillan announces the death of Colin Dexter, who died peacefully at home in Oxford this morning".

Jeremy Trevathan, publisher at Macmillan, said: "With Colin's death there has been a tectonic shift in the global crime writing scene".

"He was one of those television characters who the nation took to their hearts".

Rebecca Front, who also appeared in Lewis - which ran from 2006 until 2015 - said: "Colin Dexter loved his "Hitchcock" moments on Lewis".

Lynda La Plante said of the late author: "Colin Dexter, a masterful writer and storyteller who entertained millions of readers".

He also named his great detective after Sir Jeremy Morse, a long-standing friend and crossword compiler.

The show's producers once claimed to The Washington Post that 1 billion people around the world watched Inspector Morse and his sidekick Sgt. Lewis bring culprits to justice or at least to public exposure.

Born in Lincolnshire in 1930, Dexter studied classics at Cambridge and was a teacher before he became an author.

After a brief stint in teaching, he moved in the 1960s to Oxford, which provided the setting for the 13 Morse novels he published between 1975 and 1999.

Dexter himself had cameo appearances in all but three of the 33 episodes made between 1987 and 2000, according to Wikipedia. Dexter's role in making the show one of the most memorable of the Eighties and Nineties can not be underestimated.

Mr Dexter's contribution to his adopted home was recognised in 2001 when he was made a Freeman of the City, just months after being made an OBE in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

"I think Morse, if he had really existed and was still alive, would probably say to me, "Well, you didn't do me too bad a service in your writing".

"Thank you for your rich characters, your mischief and for being the best dinner companion anyone could wish for".

"If he had bought me a drink, a large Glenfiddich or something, that would have been very nice, but knowing him I doubt he would have done - Lewis always bought all the drinks".
