Barbados, Jamaica in Brazilian meat bans

Despite the prevalent concern in the retail industry, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries argued that the government ban on BRF products must be lifted after checking with the Brazilian Embassy in South Korea to discover that no contaminated meat was imported into the country.

In a statement issued Monday, Rambharat said Trinidad and Tobago does not raw beef from Brazil but the country does import Brazilian corned beef.

President Michel Temer has tried to reassure commercial partners about the small scale of "Operation Weak Flesh": only 21 out of over 4,800 meat processing firms are being investigated for allegedly paying off inspectors to overlook the processing of rotten meat and the export of products containing traces of salmonella.

Trotman has advised retailers to withdraw all Brazilian meat products from their shelves.

The government has suspended exports from the 21 companies under investigation, but that has not quelled concern overseas.

In the interim, the ministry said the Bureau of Standards Jamaica will conduct chemical test profiles to ascertain the contents of corned beef on the market, and the ministry's Veterinary Services Division will conduct microbiological and residue tests to ascertain whether contaminants are present in the products on the local market.

According to Brazil's Trade Ministry, the country's meat exports plunged to $74,000 (68,500 euros) on Tuesday, compared with the daily average of $63 million - a drop by 99.9 percent.

Mr Zhang Lian has 270 tonnes of frozen Brazilian beef on a ship steaming towards Shanghai that he may not be able to get through Customs when the vessel arrives next month.

Now China, Canada, Japan, Mexico and all European Union (EU) member states have either suspended or restricted imports of Brazilian meat in reaction to the corruption probe.

Numerous world's major economies have taken action after plants belonging to meat companies BRF, JBS and Grupo Peccin were targeted by police.

The circular was issued following news from global media about corruption issues related to Brazilian food, which included suspicions of illegal practices in some Brazilian beef and poultry slaughterhouses exporting to various countries. "The [agriculture] ministry has a huge job ahead of it", he said.
