Russian Federation mistakenly kills 3 Turkish troops in Syria

Peskov said that Russian Federation and Turkey will jointly investigate the deadly incident.

The Kremlin spokesman said on Friday the air strikes were based on coordinates provided to Russian Federation by the Turkish military.

The two countries have since repaired relations, and the Kremlin statement on Thursday said the two leaders had agreed to step up military coordination against ISIL. "Our forces entered the centre" with Syrian rebels, Erdogan told journalists in Istanbul before leaving for a tour of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Turkey has been trying to capture al-Bab for well over a month, but unsuccessfully.

Erdogan reiterated that Turkey does not have any plans to stay in Syria after Daesh is wiped out, saying Turkey's only goal is to "clear this region of terrorism".

"Today, around 08.40, during airstrikes against Daesh targets [in Syria], Russian combat planes accidentally hit a building hosting Turkish servicemen taking part in Euphrates Shield operation. There had not to be Turkish soldiers".

The head of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, also talked on the phone with his Turkish counterpart, Hulusi Akar, expressing his condolences over the incident.

Chief of the Russian General Staff General Valery Gerasimov held telephone talks with his Turkish counterpart, during which the issues of the fight against global terrorist groups in Syria and the situation in the northeast of the province of Aleppo were discussed.

The city, located in Syria's northern province of Aleppo, has been under siege by Turkish fighters from the west, east and north and Syrian government forces from the south.

The situation was later contained and the battles were refocused on IS again in al-Bab, which is important for both the Syrian army and the Turkish forces.

A rebel commander said fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), working with Turkish commanders, were moving forward from territory near the western gates of al-Bab, which they had stormed on Wednesday.

The clashes in Al Bab have proved the toughest so far, with Turkish military fatalities increasing. "Raqqa is their main stronghold".
