Northern Snowstorm Grounds Flights Out Of Tampa And Orlando

Some major carriers, including JetBlue, have canceled almost all flights to and from Boston.

The forecast calls for temperatures to fall to around 27 degrees by 10 a.m., with wind-chill values between 10 and 20.

The storm should be gone by midday and the sun could even shine Thursday afternoon as crews work to clear snow from roads and sidewalks.

New York City Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joe Esposito warned against "blizzard-like conditions" and said the city is likely to see additional rapid snowfall throughout the day, possibly as much as 3 inches an hour.

Multiple flights to and from the region are canceled or delayed, according to the Newport News and Norfolk airports. Click through the gallery to see more photos from this winter storm.

Flights to the following destinations, across all the affected airlines, have been cancelled: Washington, D.C.; Boston; New York; Baltimore; Philadelphia; Providence, R.I.; and Hartford, Conn. Meteorologists say high winds and blowing snow will reduce visibility in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

WBUR meteorologist David Epstein estimates that the area will see snowfall totals between 10 and 15 inches, and some parts of central MA may see additional inches.

According to FlightAware.com, more than 650 flights have been grounded at LaGuardia, where snow is falling at a rate as fast as one inch per hour, per Weather.com. The city had 2,300 salt spreaders and plows rolling, and de Blasio advised residents to use public transportation if they must travel at all. A winter storm warning is in effect, covering the entire state.

Many schools systems were closed in the area, including Boston, Philadelphia and New York City, the nation's largest with more than 1 million students. Another 13 flights set to arrive Thursday were canceled.
