Teachers On Why They Oppose Betsy DeVos As Education Secretary

Betsy DeVos was selected by Donald Trump to be Secretary of Education based on her long record as an advocate of school choice, both nationally and in her home state of MI.

Gym was alarmed by DeVos's suggestion that she would follow President-Elect Trump's pledge to eliminate gun-free zones in schools. "For me, this was not just an issue of public policy, but of national injustice". "I think accountability is highly important, and I support accountability for all schools, which is why I supported the most recent legislation in MI that is now holding all schools, including traditional public schools, accountable for performance and I will continue to support accountability and I will continue to support the implementation of Every Student Succeeds Act as Congress has intended it". And she pushed back against critics who suggested that her support of free-market policies has allowed failing charter schools to proliferate in her home state of MI.

"I would imagine that there is probably a gun in the school to protect from potential grizzlies", DeVos said. DeVos didn't address her position on climate change, but she insisted that she supports science in schools.

Advocates of public education said they will rally Thursday in Corning outside Congressman Tom Reed's office on Market Street in support of our public schools.

And even though teachers unions have painted DeVos as a public school hater, DeVos talked about her work mentoring students at Grand Rapids Public Schools.

Her biggest stumble of the day came when Virginia Sen.

DeVos went on to recall a Michigan Republican legislator who she claimed opposed public school choice because his suburban district bordered the city of Detroit, which has school children that are predominantly African American.

Donna Cooper, the director of Public Citizens for Children and Youth and a former cabinet member under Gov. Ed Rendell, said she thought DeVos seemed underprepared but performed well at points - "She didn't fight what she didn't know", she said. "I have worked very hard on behalf of parents and children for the last nearly 30 years".

In a letter addressed to the committee, 38 prominent education groups and teachers' organizations expressed concern that DeVos' track record bodes ill for public education.

My favorite thing about my job is that I get to help my students find their passion or cultivate ones that are already there.

Other groups linked to Mrs DeVos' family have previously donated $200,000 in a successful bid to add an anti-gay marriage amendment to the MI ballot, and at least $500,000 to the National Organization for Marriage.
