Hurricane Nicole is headed to Bermuda as Category 2 storm

The Category 2 hurricane, bearing maximum-sustained winds of 100 mph, is about 330 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, moving north-northwest at 7 mph.

Be Civil - It's OK to have a difference in opinion but there's no need to be a jerk.

The Category 2 storm was expected to strengthen a bit before striking the island on Thursday morning. Nicole is drifting southward, and a slightly faster southward motion is expected tonight and on Saturday, Oct. 8.

In advent of Nicole's arrival the government in Bermuda is closing schools, government offices, ferry services and the causeway connecting St. George's parish to Hamilton parish.

Maximum sustained winds are near 100 miles per hour (155 kph) with higher gusts.

The Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) warned residents "ahead of Nicole's approach to expect hazardous conditions including strong winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, unsafe surf and rip currents, and very rough seas and swells building high to very high".

Rain, wind and surf will build as the center of Nicole passes directly over or dangerously close to Bermuda. The surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. The storm is expected to veer more east of north, which could result in a direct hit on the island, bringing strong storm winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge.

The storm briefly became a hurricane last week as Hurricane Matthew was bearing down on Florida's Atlantic coast.

Conditions are forecast to improve as Nicole moves away from Bermuda into the North Atlantic on Thursday night into Friday. Fortunately, the island will be roughly at low tide at the storm's peak.
