Denis Shapovalov pulls off upset in first round of Rogers Cup

Kyrgios was upset by world No. 370 and reigning Wimbledon junior champion Denis Shapovalov in the first round, and didn't hesitate in firing a shot at his homeland. Jack Sock beat Denis Kudla 6-2, 6-2 and Ryan Harrison ousted Andrey Kuznetsov of Russian Federation 6-3, 6-1.

Kyrgios, the 11th seed, was the only seeded player to depart.

Isner and Tomic were joined as winners by Jack Sock and Grigor Dimitrov, while Kyrgios slumped to a defeat. Peter Polansky overcame Tim Smyczek 4-6 6-3 6-0. "To come off one of your biggest junior results and then play in one of your home tournaments, that feeling is great and I hope he enjoys it and rests up and does well".

When Kyrgios managed to break his opponent in the second game of the second set - the first break of the match - it felt more like luck than skill, and the Canadian simply got right back on his horse and took away Kyrgios' serve the next game.

Nick Kyrgios has been knocked out on day one of the Rogers Cup by 17-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

Canadian Steven Diez surprised Briton Kyle Edmund 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Polansky was broken in the first game of the first sets, but rebounded nicely in the following two sets.

Kyrgios broke Shapovalov again to take a 5-3 advantage and win the set.

Having worked his way inside the top 400 on the world's top pro tour, Shapovalov, a disciple of his family's tennis academy in Vaughan, certainly thought he was capable of putting up a fight and putting on a show against Kyrgios.

"I think the Canadians support their athletes a little better than the Australians do", Kyrgios said.

"Jeez, I didn't know I had that many double faults".

On a warm day in Toronto, Tomic was also a victor, beating Alejandro Gonzalez 6-4 7-6 (7-1).

Shapovalov said he's going to celebrate the first-round victory a bit, but his main focus is preparing for his next match.

At one point during the match in the first round defeat in one hour and 40 minutes, Kyrgios, 21, shouted to his box: "I'm going home".

Kyrgios racked up 13 double faults at the match's midway point.

"Tournament is not over".
