International Olympic Committee reveals another 45 failed drug tests from Beijing & London

The news came on the day the International Olympic Committee announced a further 45 athletes had tested positive after a second set of samples provided at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games were reanalysed.

The findings from the second wave of testing bring the total number of failed tests to 98, with two further batches to follow.

The IOC said the previous first wave of retests had found 30 positive cases from Beijing and 23 from London.

The 15 positive tests from 2012 were from two sports and nine countries.

'The new reanalysis once again shows the commitment of the International Olympic Committee in the fight against doping, ' International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said.

The organisation have been left reeling following the release of Richard McLaren's Independent Commission report into alleged state-sponsored doping by Russian Federation during their home Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, as well as in competitions in summer sports.

The IOC said all athletes found to have infringed the anti-doping rules will be banned from competing at Rio 2016.

The second wave of retests included 386 samples from Beijing, involving four sports and eight countries.

A total of 30 tests came back positive in the first wave of testing from Beijing, while 23 were detected from London.

The IOC was not able to identify the athletes concerned, citing legal reasons.

The International Olympic Committee already has a shortlist under consideration to be added to the program for the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Forty-five more athletes, including 31 medalists, have been caught for doping after retesting of samples from the last two Summer Olympics, the IOC said Friday.

The third and fourth rounds of re-analysis will be carried out during after the Games in Brazil, which start in two weeks.

The news comes one day after the global Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected an appeal from more than 60 track and field athletes from Russia who were seeking to compete despite their national sporting federation's recent suspension.

Yelena Isinbayeva, Russia's two-time Olympic pole vault champion, also called on the IOC to have the final say after labeling the verdict as "purely political".
